Single vellum sheet, 29 x 22cm, pen & ink, signed Evan Price with wax seal, blue paper strip along blank left edge, further signatures on verso with printed paper duty stamp. A very rare document from the 1742 foundation date of the Free School Of King Edward VI of Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, appointing the Rev. Thomas Allott of Rickmansworth as usher to the school. The school was mired in legal controversy from the point of foundation as a legal writ was issued in Michaelmas term 1742 attesting that the value of the lands attached to the school greatly exceeded the financial needs of the school and these should have spent on the support of the poor in the district. The case was finally resolved in 1754 when the High Court resolved that any residue should be distributed among the poor. Sneyd.
